Why Is My Pressure Cooker Leaking Steam?

When the pressure cooker lid is not placed correctly on the cooking pot, it’s going to release steam.

This is the simple reason why many of these pressure cooking tools leak steam from their pots.

Since these tools produce a lot of pressure inside the pot, the pressurized steam often looks for small openings.

Generally, the whistle does a great job of releasing excess steam from the cooker.

However, when the steam finds a gap or small opening in this system, it automatically gets released into the air.

So, how do you fix this interesting kitchen issue?

You can make use of some of the methods and solutions suggested below.

8 Tips To Fix The Pressure Cooker Leaking Steam Issue

Here’s a list of things you can try to resolve this issue –

1. Clean The Gasket Ring

That’s right!

When you know the steam is leaking from the pressure cooker, your first point of action should be to clean the gasket ring on your cooker lid.

It is the main cause of this issue, and it often creates small gaps between the cooker’s pot and lid.

And when the gaps get wider, the steam starts escaping from the pot more vigorously.

Therefore, you should make it a habit to clean the gasket ring a couple of times in the week.

Generally, the tiny food particles stick to this rubber ring.

And as you use your pressure cooker regularly, the particles form a layer on the ring and help create a gap between the lid and pot.

To fix this issue, simply clean the gasket ring with any dishwashing soap.

Once it’s cleaned, let it dry out completely before you place it on the lid.

Note: Do not use a scrubber to remove the sticky particles from the ring.

You might end up damaging the ring!

2. Replace The Gasket Ring

When was the last time you changed the gasket ring?

I know the pressure cooker is probably the most used tool in our Indian kitchens, but we usually forget to take care of it.

Even though cleaning is an essential part of the maintenance, you should also look at these small parts once in a while.

When you use your pressure cooker on a daily basis, some of its parts, like the gasket ring, might get worn out sooner than you’d expect.

In such cases, you must replace this ring to avoid the stem leaking issue in your pressure cooker.

It will help in preventing a major accident later.

Also, these rings are easily available in the local markets as well as online stores.

And they do not cost a lot either!

So, go ahead and replace the gasket ring of your pressure cooker lid.

It will surely stop the steam leakage issue.

3. Check For Any Damage On The Cooker Lid

Replaced the gasket and still facing the same issue?

You need to check for any damage on the lid itself.

If the lid is not closing the pressure cooker properly, it could help steam release from the pot.

And if you can’t find the damage to the lid, you may also take it to a local repair shop.

4. Check The Edges Of Your Pressure Cooker Pot

Similar to the lid, you should also inspect the edges of the pot.

Many times when you cook curries or rice dishes in the cooker, you hit the ladle or spoon on the edges to get rid of sticky masala.

This is a very common habit among all food makers!

But it can also create a small dent on the edges, especially if you hit the metal spoon more often.

So, do take a close look at the edges of your cooker pot and see if you can find any such dents on it.

And if you do, you should take the pressure cooker to any nearby service center.

They might help you fix this issue with some of their professional tools.

Note: Do not try to fix the dent on your own, as you might cause damage to the cooker as well as yourself.

5. Place The Lid Properly

Sometimes, you don’t need to do anything from the above list!

Just a little adjustment on the lid can also help in stopping the steam leaking from the cooker.

Important: You should never do it when the flame is on and pressure is too high inside the pot.

The hot steam might release quickly and will cause injuries.

So, please be careful when you want to adjust the lid on your pressure cooker.

6. Place The Whistle Properly

Is the steam leaking from the whistle?

Although it’s quite normal to see a small amount of steam releasing from this opening, there is a possibility that you might not have placed the whistle correctly on the lid.

If you can adjust it properly, it should fix the steam release issue entirely.

Again, this should be done when the pressure cooker is not too hot!

Alternatively, you may ask an experienced person in your house to do so.

7. Add Less Water To Your Pressure Cooker

It’s not always about the mechanical fault in the pressure cooker!

The pressure cooker may also release more steam if the water content is relatively higher in the cooking pot.

So, make sure you add only the required amount of water to cook the rice or any other preparation in your pressure cooker model.

If you are not sure how much water your cooker needs, you may refer to the user manual provided with the product.

You can also visit their official website to find more about the usage.

8. Get A New Pressure Cooker

Tried everything?

If the problem still persists, you should consider getting a replacement or a new model altogether.

It’d be the best possible option for you to avoid the steam leaking issue from your pressure cooker.

In the following section, you will find a few more tips related to this topic.

So, do check them out below.

Useful Tips For Using Your Pressure Cooker Perfectly

Here are the tips for you –

  1. Always make sure the lid is closed correctly on your pressure cooker pot.
  2. Do not force open the lid after you’ve cooked rice or something else in the cooker. Allow it to cool down for 8-10 minutes.
  3. Do not make any lid adjustments or water adjustments when the pressure cooker is on the flame.
  4. Clean your pressure cooker after every use.
  5. You should always place the cooker on a flat surface, including when you’re cooking it on the flame. If it’s tilted on one side, it may leak steam from the pot.
  6. Replace the gasket ring every 8-10 months or whenever it loses its elasticity.

Now, let’s look at the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions by the readers.

FAQs

1. Why Is My Pressure Cooker Not Releasing Steam?

There could be two possibilities here.

First one, you have not added enough water to the cooker.

Secondly, you have been cooking it on a slightly low flame.

So, try to fix these issues, and you should be able to see some steam coming out of your pressure cooker model.

2. How Do You Release Steam From A Pressure Cooker?

If you are using a traditional pressure cooker, you can simply lift the whistle for a few seconds to release the steam.

However, it’s important to do it using a cloth or heat-resistant gloves.

You may also use a spoon to lift the whistle.

But never do it with your bare hands!

3. Is The Pressure Cooker Valve Supposed To Be Loose?

Yes, it helps in regulating the steam releasing from the cooker.

4. How To Open Pressure Cooker Lid?

It depends on the model you are using in your kitchen.

But generally, the traditional ones can be opened by removing the lock and bending the handle slightly downwards.

Note: The lid will only open if the majority of steam has been released into the air.

5. Can Pressure Cooker Explode?

Yes, the pressure cooker can explode if the hot steam is locked inside the pot, and there is no way to release it automatically.

Hence, you must check all the pressure cooker parts thoroughly before putting it on the flame.
