What Is Paratha?

For those who don’t know:

Paratha is a type of unleavened flatbread that is popular in the Indian subcontinent.

It is made by rolling dough out into a thin sheet and folding it over several times.

This creates multiple layers, which are then cooked on a Tawa.

There are many different types and ways to make Parathas in India.

Some of the popular ones include – Aloo Paratha, Laccha Paratha, Gobi Paratha, Matar Paratha, etc.

Now, let’s try and understand the dishes that can be served with this Indian flatbread.

What To Eat With Paratha?

Paratha is a popular Indian flatbread that is enjoyed with a variety of toppings and fillings.

But if you are looking for some accompaniments, you might come across many different varieties of dishes and accompaniments that go along with them.

From plain butter to rich Mughlai gravies, you can relish your Parathas with any of these accompaniments.

In the next section, I have shared some interesting options for you.

So, do check them out below.

10+ Accompaniments To Serve With Parathas

Here are some of the most popular accompaniments for your Parathas –

1. Chutneys

Chutney is a type of sauce that is made from various fruits or vegetables.

It can be sweet or savory and is a perfect accompaniment to Paratha.

You can also try Schezwan chutney with parathas, which is a spicy sauce that is often served with Indo-Chinese dishes.

Here are some of the chutneys you can try with Parathas –

  1. Mango Chutney- This is a sweet, tangy, and spicy chutney made from ripe mangos.
  2. Tamarind Chutney: This chutney is known for its sweet and tangy flavors, and you can try it with some of the stuffed Parathas.
  3. Pineapple Chutney: This is a sweet and sour chutney, and it complements really well the spicy taste of Parathas.
  4. Coriander Chutney – This is a spicy, green chutney made from fresh Coriander leaves. You can serve this chutney with yogurt-based raita.
  5. Mint Chutney – This chutney is mildly spicy, and you can make it fresh Mint leaves, Coriander leaves, and Dahi.

2. Jam or Murabba

Murabba is a type of Indian relish made from fruits or vegetables.

It is often sweet and sour, and you can have it with Paratha or Roti.

Some popular murabba varieties include:

  1. Mango Murabba: This is a sweet and sour murabba made from ripe Mangoes.
  2. Pineapple Murabba: This is a sweet and sour murabba made from Pineapple.
  3. Beetroot Murabba: This is a sweet and sour murabba made from Beetroot.

If you don’t like Murabbas, you can also savor it with some jams.

Kids do love this combination of Jam and Paratha or Murabba and Parathas.

So, do consider preparing it for their lunch boxes.

3. Vegetable Curries

It’s a classic combination for Parathas!

Paratha goes well with cooked vegetables, such as Cauliflower, Green Peas, and Carrots.

Other than that, you can also relish them with Punjabi-style Chole (Chickpea curry).

Paneer preparations like Paneer Tikka Masala, Paneer Kadai, Paneer Bhurji, etc., can also be served with Parathas, though these side dishes are good for lunch or heavy meals.

4. Non-veg. Curries

Paratha can be enjoyed with a variety of meats, such as chicken, lamb, or beef.

You can even serve it with egg curries.

Malabar Paratha tastes so good with typical Andhra style or Kerala style egg curries.

For meat curries, you can enjoy Parathas with the curries that come with thick gravy with a hint of spicy taste.

This is a truly amazing combination, and you should definitely try it once if you have never tried it before.

5. Ghee And Jaggery

Well, you can simply serve it with Ghee and Jaggery as well.

This rustic combination has everything you need to relish your Parathas.

Ghee will also help tone down the spices in the Parathas, and Jaggery will add an interesting dimension to this whole combination.

If you are looking for a sweet and savory Paratha-accompaniment combination, then you should definitely try this out.

You can try this combination with other flatbreads too.

6. Yogurt

Plain yogurt is a great way to balance out the flavors of Paratha.

You can also try flavored yogurts with any of your favorite flavors like Mango, Strawberry, etc.

Or, if you want to add some spices to it, you can certainly flavor it with Red Chili Powder, Chaat Masala Powder, and Black Pepper Powder.

7. Raita

Raita is a yogurt-based side dish perfect for cooling down your palate after eating spicy food.

It is made with various ingredients like chopped onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, boiled eggs, etc.

You can also add different spices to it like Chaat Masala Powder, Black Pepper Powder, and Cumin Powder.

You may even try Boondi Raita with Paratha.

On the whole, raita is a great way to enjoy your Parathas, and you can have it with any Parathas.

8. Pickles

Another classic accompaniment for Parathas!

Indian pickles are a popular condiment that can be enjoyed with Paratha.

There are a variety of pickles that can be enjoyed with Paratha, such as:

  1. Mango Pickle: This is a sweet and sour pickle that is made from ripe mangos.
  2. Lime Pickle: This is a sour and spicy pickle made from limes.
  3. Mixed Vegetable Pickle: This is a variety of mixed vegetables pickled in spices.
  4. Ginger Pickle: This is a pungent pickle made from fresh ginger.
  5. Garlic Pickle: This is a spicy and sour pickle made from fresh garlic.

So, these are some pickles you can try with Parathas.

9. Salad

Salad is another great option if you are bored with the usual Paratha accompaniments.

There are a variety of salads that you can enjoy with Paratha, such as Cucumber Salad, Tomato Salad, Onion Salad, Mixed Vegetable Salad, etc.

You can also add your favorite dressing to it, like Oil and Lemon Dressing, Green Chutney Dressing, and Tamarind Chutney Dressing.

Whenever you serve salad, make sure it is fresh and crunchy.

These two elements will help balance out the spicy flavors of your Parathas.

10. Desserts

Paratha can also be enjoyed as a dessert, with sweet toppings such as honey, sugar, or rabdi.

If you want to experiment further, try them with Sheera or Payasam.

These two desserts will add a touch of sweetness to your Parathas, and you will love the combination.

Also, these can be really exciting combinations for plain Parathas.

BONUS: Have It With Chai!

Another great way to enjoy your Parathas is by pairing them with chai.

Masala Chai is a traditional Indian tea made with various spices like Cardamom, Cloves, Cinnamon, etc.

To be honest, if you don’t want to waste time on making different accompaniments, chai can be a great way to go.

Simply enjoy your hot and delicious Parathas with a cup of steaming chai.

On that note, let’s conclude this list of Paratha accompaniments here.

No matter what you choose to eat with your Paratha, it is sure to be a delicious and satisfying meal.

So, what are you waiting for?

Go ahead and try out these accompaniments today!

In the following section, I have shared some FAQs related to this topic.

Do check them out if you have any queries in mind.

You can have it with various curries, like potatoes or chickpeas curry (Punjabi Chole).

Some people also eat roti paratha with pickles or chutney to give it more flavor.

2. What Can I Eat With Aloo Paratha?

Aloo Paratha is a very versatile dish and can be eaten with a variety of sauces and condiments.

You can try this variation with different chutneys, curries, raitas, or simply with clarified butter (ghee) or fresh yogurt.

However, you can get creative and come up with your own combinations too.

For e.g., I enjoy eating Aloo Paratha with a spicy Maa ki Dal or delicious chole with tamarind chutney.

3. Can Parathas Be Eaten In Dinner?

Yes, you can definitely eat Parathas for dinner.

It’s just another type of flatbread, so there won’t be any issue as such.

4. Should We Eat Paratha With Curd?

In fact, I often enjoy a Paratha with raita (a yogurt-based condiment).

5. What Curry Goes With Paratha?

Generally, rich curries go well with Parathas.

Do not serve it with dry preparations, though.

Your guests may not enjoy two dry dishes, i.e., Paratha and Dry Sabzi, for the same meal.

You can experiment with different dishes and come up with your own combinations.
